Please tell us about yourself and your family.
Coming from a small Indian family, I started my career with an IT support company as a support technician and completed my CCNA to progress my career. In 2005, I joined one of the biggest financial institutions in India, Bajaj Capital. Within a short time, I was promoted to System Engineer with responsibility of overseeing the whole of the EastIndia branches. In 2007, I was approached by Lotus Technologies to join their team in Uganda as a support person; however, owing to my leadership abilities, I advanced to the position of General Manager within 3 years. Since then, I have continued to improve my managerial skills and grow the business. My current employer, Surgipharm Uganda Ltd., offered me a position as general manager in 2021. It was a challenge for me to make a switch from the IT industry to pharmaceuticals, but as it says, " Every challenge is an opportunity to grow," I put my best foot forward, and fruitful results have started coming.
My brother lives in the UK and works as the general manager of a 5-star hotel. My parents live in India and visit the UK and Uganda occasionally.
What drew you to the programme you are studying at UniAthena? Do you think it would help you realise your career goals?
Since I've been in general management for the last 12 years, I have learned a lot on the job and through experience. However, I always had the feeling that, at some point, my education could be a barrier or would not allow me to grow. I always felt drawn to pursue an MBA and potentially a doctorate in business administration that could advance my career to the next level. After doing a lot of research for online courses and world university rankings, I found UniAthena is not only cost effective but has partnerships with universities with excellent global rankings. This will certainly help me realize my career goals.
What would you like to learn next? What are your next career steps?
Definitely, a doctorate in business administration will be my next step if it fits well with my understanding of online learning.
What do you think makes a great teacher?
A great teacher is the one capable of understanding student behaviour and making his or her message clear without leaving room for doubts.
What’s your dream job?
I love being a team leader and handling management tasks and challenges regardless of the circumstances. I do love my job so my dream job will always be in management.
If you face a problem at work, what is the first thing you do?
Understand, think, and plan. I try to understand the problem first, brainstorm possible solutions, and then draw up a plan to overcome it.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your life? How did you tackle it?
In management, I have faced many challenges, but to name the biggest challenge, I had to shift my career from IT to Pharma. I was completely new to the pharmaceutical industry. Though core management remains relatively the same, attending supplier and sales/marketing meetings was a great challenge for me as I couldn’t understand which brands moved fast or had challenges, which programmes could help them grow, how to identify non moving items, etc.
I started reading financials and the last two years' data on product movement. As the next step, I keep researching individual products on Google, reviewing SPO manuals and previous case studies on non-moving products. This helped me acquire a lot of knowledge about business in general. Next, I came up with my way of working with all employees, which motivated all employees to increase sales more than in previous years.
If you could only change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
To go back in time and complete my formal education instead of running for a job.
What was the last book you read and the last movie you saw?
The Richest Man in Babylon and Jurassic World Dominion.
Mention one important lesson you have learned in life that has made you who you are today.
