Please tell us about yourself.
I am Hironimus Rotok Sugi. My friends call me Hiro. I graduated from the Nusa Cendana State University in Kupang, the capital of East Nusa Tenggara Province, Indonesia, back in 1996. My major was in the English Study Programme for Teacher Training and Scientific Faculty.
What drew you to the programme you are studying at UniAthena?
I was inclined towards the Master Degree in Public Administration owing to its 100% online format.
Do you think it would help you realise your career goals?
Yes, I do. I think so because this study programme is relevant to the field of operations in the public sector, something I have been involved in for 25 years in the development sector.
What would you like to learn next?
I would like to learn about good governance, strategies for solving public issues, and ways to avoid isomorphic mimicry in public apparatus.
What are your next career steps?
I want to apply for an international position in an organisation that works for international development.
How has your academic journey prepared you for your career?
In most cases, my career path closely aligns with my academic study; the field I work in is more complex than my academic pursuits, and it requires a high level of adaptability.
Tell us about a time where you tackled a challenging goal without waiting for "the right moment," relying on your leadership skills to make it happen."
I believe the best time to start is now. I can begin as soon as possible, as I believe there is no ideal time; it completely depends on your ability to manage it.
Describe a time you stepped outside your comfort zone and demonstrated leadership skills.
It was June 2003 in Timor during my time as a senior field staff member. My manager took his annual leave when our programme implementation rate in the first semester was below 20%. Following my manager's leave, he tasked me as an Officer in Charge (OIC). Our DD asked me for substantial reasons for the delay in implementing the programme and asked me to provide workable solutions. I provided three recommendations, viz., the restructuring of our organization as I observed the unbalanced composition, Secondly, improving the working mechanism between our field office and operations, and finally, efficiency in using administrative resources.
Which book would you recommend as a must-read for everyone, and why?
Building State Capacity: Evidence, Analysis, and Action by Matt Andrews, Lant Pritchett, and Michael Woolcock This book is essential reading for people working in the public sector who analyze and take action based on the evidence.
What is your dream job, and why?
I want to become an inspiring leader who can motivate individuals to make a positive impact in the public sector and contribute to the welfare of people in needy regions.
Do you have any message for professionals just starting out in their careers?
Don’t delay in pursuing your educational goals, because this investment will prepare you to face complex challenges both personally and professionally.
