Executive MBA Batch 2021

Please tell us about yourself, your family and your interests.

I was born on January 19, 1976 in Ghana and was named Alex Kafui Azasu. I am the first child of my mother and the ninth of my father. I completed my secondary education in 1993 and acquired my BSc Degree in 1999 from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

I began my working career in my second year at university when I joined a company for an internship. Having performed so well on the job while still a student, the Managing Director promoted me to the position of Assistant Engineer and gave me a commensurate pay. Since then, I have had the chance to join the company every vacation to continue working, I was given an automatic appointment when I completed my course in 1999 and worked with them as a Quantity Surveyor and later as a Contract Manager.

In 2003, I enrolled to pursue MSc in Construction Management at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology and completed all the taught courses but could not complete my thesis due to transfers and a hectic work schedule. The taught courses equipped me with the requisite knowledge in construction and project management. This background in construction management enabled me to establish Mak Projects Limited-a Building, Civil Engineering and Road Construction Company in mid-2004, and since then I have been the CEO.

I am married with six children: the first one completed BSc in Finance and Accounting from Lancaster University in 2020, the second is in the third year in a University in Ghana pursuing Law and the rest are at the basic and secondary levels.

I am very passionate about the social development of my community and love to mentor a number of young people.

What drew you to the program you are studying at Athena? Is it living up to your expectations?

The online dual degree from Athena is exciting for me since it gives me the flexibility to learn/acquire two degrees within a short time without interrupting my work.

I have just begun the program and hopefully my expectations will be met.

What would you like to do after completing this course from Athena?

I have always wanted to improve upon my education and to pursue several degrees at the PhD level in order to better manage my business and  enhance my mentoring programs for the youth. I would also love to become a lecturer in a University in the future.

What do you think makes a great teacher?

In my opinion, a great teacher is one who is able to identify the needs/lapses of their students and tailor solutions to help them improve while encouraging them throughout their learning journey.

What’s your dream job?

Being the CEO of my own company has been my dream job. It’s a dream come true for me. Additionally, I would love to acquire several PhDs and lecture part-time in a university in the future.

What is the most courageous thing you have ever done?

Leaving my well-paying job in 2004 with my family to start my own construction company. The risk involved was very high but I was courageous and moved on. It paid off.

What is your best childhood memory?

When I used to farm on an acre of land all by myself before the age of 10. I cultivated food crops such as corn, yam, cassava, cocoyam and others.

What is your idea of a perfect vacation?

Travelling to many countries and visiting many iconic and historic places.

Which fictional character (character from a film, book, TV series and play) would you like to be friends with?

James Bond, the fictional British Secret Service agent created by writer Ian Fleming.

Mention one important lesson you have learned in life that made you what you are today.

I have learnt that it is always good to take the first bold step to achieving your dreams despite the risks that might be associated. This became apparent when I left my well-paying job in 2004 with a family of four to start my own construction company. At that time it was a difficult decision but it paid off.
