Please tell us about yourself.
I have been a serving member of the armed forces for almost 25 years, with aspirations of excelling in engineering. My engineering roots stemmed from trade school, followed by my induction into the construction industry while working for an electric company prior to serving my country.
What drew you to the programme you are studying at UniAthena?
I was drawn to UniAthena’s programme after becoming a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology. While focusing on professional engineering qualifications, I researched programmes at the master’s level. UniAthena’s Master in Engineering Management programme offers both educational and financial flexibility. I firmly believe that this programme can help me realize my career goals.
What would you like to learn next?
I would like to continue my specialization in the engineering field.
What are your next career steps?
My next career step would be to acquire advanced professional engineering qualifications.
Tell us about a time you planned and accomplished a challenging goal.
Last year, I undertook a project with a four-month lead time. What made it more challenging was the fact that the budget was set prior to the COVID outbreak and prices surged during the middle phase. The movement also became a massive obstacle as there were extensive restrictions. The team was brought in, adjustments were made to materials, installation, and timelines, and things were restructured. The project was completed but slightly overbudget and ran four weeks behind schedule.
Considering all the people you've met in your field, what personal attributes do you believe are essential for success?
Throughout my career, I’ve met many individuals in the engineering field, and the personal attributes I believe are essential to success are determination, respect, and honour.
Describe a time you stepped outside your comfort zone and demonstrated leadership skills.
There was a time I had to step outside my comfort zone and take a stand for proper engineering practices. It was not easy because I was new to the team and I didn’t want to be perceived as disrespectful. Nevertheless, the cause was worth fighting for. Ultimately, the parties agreed that I had a quite valid point and that they would implement our new plan.
Which book would you recommend as a must-read for everyone, and why?
A must read book, in my opinion, is ‘Systems Engineering Handbook’. This book was written by a group of system engineers. It highlights life cycles, technical processes, technical management, and the acquisition process to name a few. I believe that one way or another, all readers will take away some principles that could enhance their professional and personal lives.
What is your dream job, and why?
My dream job is to lead a large corporation as a professional engineer. I aim at developing better training programmes for upcoming engineers with an all-inclusive view to assist engineers in all branches of engineering.
Do you have any messages for professionals just starting out in their careers?
My message to all professionals starting their career would be, format a plan, a road map with multiple possible routes to your end goal. Furthermore, seek individuals that share similar goals and drive, who are willing to help you through your journey. Don’t focus on finances at the start but learn the fundamentals and principles of your practice.
