Please tell us about yourself.

My name is Rachel Omagha. I am an academic parasitologist with a PhD in Parasitology and Bioinformatics. I work as a civil servant at the Federal School of Medical Laboratory Technology where I teach courses in health education and parasitology. I also work as a research fellow at the Center for Transdisciplinary Research on malaria and neglected tropical diseases. Personally, I am a Godly woman striving to be as caring, charitable, as homely, and dependable as I can possibly be through everyday opportunities and grace.

What attracted you to the program you're enrolled in at UniAthena? Do you believe it will contribute to achieving your career objectives?

Generally, I want to keep nurturing my passion for education. However, I particularly aimed to use UniAthena short courses to diversify my basic skills. This is in hopes of more rounded success in the various roles I am looking forward to. The skills I acquired have been helpful and will always come in handy in the future.

What would you like to learn next?

I would like to learn more about partnership and collaboration. I also want to have lessons on everyday tech skills.

What are your next career steps?

Right now I am applying to change my job mostly for personal reasons. In addition, I am looking forward to being more involved in order to gain more meaningful experiences, and to have better growth opportunities.

How has your academic journey prepared you for your career?

I think my academic journey has majorly impacted my appreciation of students’ perspectives. My experiences have particularly taught me to empathize with students as they too navigate academic challenges. Various programs and opportunities have helped prepare me to be able to deliver lectures and presentations, design and create course content, and guide students in their own research. My time management abilities were also highly developed as I learned to balance my coursework, research, and other commitments.

Tell us about a time you planned and accomplished a challenging goal.

I am not yet very good at incorporating technology into my tasks. Once my PowerPoint was so wrongly done it won’t even open until some expert interventions from some of my colleagues in the audience that day. Though I eventually got very encouraging commendations for my composure, focus and overall performance, the quality of my PowerPoint was so criticized I knew addressing that gap was an urgent priority. So I paid a friend soon after the seminar to have a training session. When that didn’t work, I quickly began to explore educational videos online which really helped me develop the skills. Now, I have a growing knowledge as I continue to effectively use Microsoft tools for my work. Still, I have further plans to undertake professional training sessions in Office software and productivity packages and enhance my overall tech skills.

Considering all the people you've met in your field, what personal attributes do you believe are essential for success?

I have come to appreciate and prioritize positive traits including passion for what I do and integrity to successfully work with relevant stakeholders in my areas of interest.

Describe a time you stepped outside your comfort zone and demonstrated leadership skills.

My director put me in charge of coordinating some administrative processes for a big grant application that I had no previous experience in. I took the initiative to download the call for that application. I unpacked the document and noted each step required. Luckily the call included a detailed description of roles and responsibilities for each member at various aspects of the application and the project as a whole. So it was clear what roles I was expected to play - it majorly entailed setting up effective communication channels for each group, coordinating and attending meetings, tracking progress, and reporting some allocated tasks. I sincerely enjoyed that assignment and my director commended my initiatives despite my lack of experience. He also commended the passion with which I took responsibility and got everyone to work together, especially the additional responsibility of using personal communications to follow up on those who needed further clarifications, reminders, and support.

Which book would you recommend as a must-read for everyone, and why?

Michelle Obama's books absolutely inspire me. I found “Becoming” very encouraging as I learned how with so much soul and substance, an ordinary person managed challenging experiences, defiled expectations, and now lives a life that inspires, impacts, and uplifts others. The book demonstrates that despite your background, it is possible to be beautifully accomplished from the inside out. I would recommend it for everyone also to strive to embrace hard work and integrity, to live positively, to overcome limitations, and to make a difference in the lives of people around them.

What is your dream job, and why?

I do not exactly have a particular dream job. I like teaching, I like mentoring, and these are the main areas my development and experiences have focused on. I am empathetic, and I have a passion for problem-solving that makes me feel very drawn towards contributing to addressing situations in order to ease suffering and improve living standards so as to enable people to take good care of themselves and create their own happiness. So, all I truly want is to be able to use my skills, attributes, and experiences to help people and to contribute to solving relevant humanitarian problems as needed.

Do you have any message for professionals just starting out in their careers?

First I will say endeavor to make the right choices. You will need to know what you want, and then know what you don't want. Identify the right fit for you, and prayerfully, patiently work hard to reach for the stars! Your goals deserve your very best shot. So give it everything you’ve got. Don’t let circumstances dictate what you’re going to be. Look around and you will find people who are willing to assist. You will also find helpful resources, utilize them, and have faith that things will work out at the right time. God bless.
