Tell us about yourself and what made you choose your program at UniAthena? How do you think it will help you in your future career?
My name is Thomas Adongo Musah. I am 40 years old, Ghanaian, and married with two children. I have been a mathematics teacher for the past seven years. I hold a Master’s degree in Mathematics Education, a Postgraduate Diploma in Mathematics, and a Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education (Mathematics).
I chose to study at UniAthena because of its flexible fee payment options, well-structured and self-paced online learning model, and most importantly, its specialized focus on Information Technology integrated within Business Administration and Management.
In fact, this area of study will significantly enhance my digital exposure, deepen my experience and skill set, and expand my knowledge base. It will also strengthen my prospects for employment in ICT-related fields, organizational management, and leadership roles.
What are you most excited to learn or explore next in your studies?
I aim to deepen my skills in cybersecurity, digital systems management, strategic leadership, and general information management. I’m also eager to explore the broader landscape of information and communication technology.
Additionally, I aim to develop competencies in business development, with a focus on public administration and entrepreneurship, to enhance both my professional and personal growth.
Could you outline the career goals you have in mind after completing your current academic journey?
After completing my current academic journey, my career goals are centered around becoming an expert in general IT operations and serving as an Information Technology Coordinator within governmental or non-governmental organizations. I also aspire to become an IT Tutor, equipped with the skills and experience to effectively impart knowledge in various areas of information technology.
How are you managing your studies along with work in your personal life?
As a teacher, being time-conscious is my top priority in balancing these demanding responsibilities. I’ve structured a personal timetable to avoid conflicts between work and study, allowing me to stay organized and successfully manage both commitments.
Share a specific example of a challenging goal you set for yourself and successfully accomplished. What did you learn from this experience?
One challenging goal I set for myself was to become a secondary school mathematics teacher, despite having completed my first degree in Elementary Education. Driven by determination, I took a bold step and pursued a Postgraduate Diploma in Applied Mathematics to strengthen my subject knowledge.
This decision equipped me with the necessary expertise and confidence to transition into teaching at the secondary level. Through this experience, I learned that with commitment and a clear vision, it’s possible to overcome academic limitations and achieve professional growth.
From your experiences so far, what personal qualities do you think are important for achieving success?
From my experience, the personal qualities essential for achieving success include a strong work ethic, effective interpersonal skills, and the ability to collaborate as a team player. Time management and punctuality are also crucial. Cultivating an adaptable leadership style plays a vital role in driving team success.
Tell us about a time when you stepped outside your comfort zone to take on a leadership role. What was the outcome?
In November–December 2023, I stepped outside my comfort zone, volunteering to apply for the position of Assembly Member in my community—a local government leadership role. This position is unpaid and requires a strong commitment to serve and manage day-to-day activities that support community development through government initiatives, private individuals, or philanthropic efforts.
Despite my demanding schedule as a teacher, I was determined to contribute meaningfully to my community and took the bold step to stand for election. Although I was not elected, the experience strengthened my leadership skills and deepened my dedication to community service. I continue to volunteer my time and efforts to support local development initiatives.
If you could recommend one book that you believe everyone should read, what would it be and why?
Throughout my life, I haven’t focused on reading books with the intention of recommending them to others. Instead, I find great value in reading articles and academic publications related to education, especially those that offer practical insights I can apply to classroom challenges. I also regularly read newspapers to stay informed and explore better job opportunities.
What is your dream job and what motivates you about it?
My dream job is to become a CEO, Director, or Executive Director of a group of companies or a functional governmental organization. What motivates me is my strong sense of self-esteem, patience, and ability to work well in teams. I aspire to lead individuals and groups toward achieving meaningful goals that contribute to the society's well-being.
What advice would you offer to professionals who are just starting their careers based on your own experiences?
Being time-conscious, respecting hierarchy, a team player, and socially engaged are key attributes every professional should cultivate to thrive in any professional setting.
