Postgraduate Certificate in Engineering Management | Batch 2025

Tell us about yourself and what made you choose your program at UniAthena? How do you think it will help you in your future career?

I am excited to be studying for the Postgraduate Certificate in Engineering Management from UniAthena. I believe that this program will offer insightful perspectives into Engineering Management and its application in my field. What drew me to this program with UniAthena is its affordability, which allows me to study without compromising my financial commitments. I believe the skills I will acquire from my PGC program will expand my understanding and help me resolve future challenges with efficiency and precision.

What are you most excited to learn or explore next in your studies?

I am deeply interested in developing foundational management skills and, most importantly, the interaction of project management and different aspects, such as supply chain. I am also curious about the links between production and consumer relationships.

Could you outline your career goals you have in mind for after completing your current academic journey?

I wish to secure a leadership role in a leading engineering firm or a technology company. I aspire to lead and make a meaningful impact in the organization I work for, especially by applying my newly acquired skills during this program.

How are you managing your studies along with the work in your personal life?

Managing studies, work, and personal life can be challenging,  but I get ahead by creating a schedule that will balance study time, work hours, and personal activities. I focus on prioritization and ensure that in the hustle, I don’t neglect self-care to relax and recharge. I also heavily rely on my support system, and surround myself with people who understand my goals.

Share a specific example of a challenging goal you set for yourself and successfully accomplished. What did you learn from this experience?

I had set myself a goal to build a house in the village, which I achieved successfully. I learned that any task can be accomplished by making a SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time‑bound) goal. Breaking the project into smaller, manageable tasks, having an action plan, and regularly monitoring progress are key.

From your experiences so far, what personal qualities do you think are important for achieving success?

I found that resilience, adaptability, determination, self-discipline, curiosity to learn, creativity, and perseverance are most  valued in the modern workplace.

Tell us about a time when you stepped outside your comfort zone to take on a leadership role. What was the outcome?

Key steps to secure a leadership role include strong communication skills, building trust in your team, adapting to new situations, and embracing challenges. Some years back, I led a project to set up a train network between Tsumeb and Ondangwa. We prepared well, but no matter how detailed the preparation is, setbacks are inevitable.

And it is during these setbacks that we were really tested. We were required to install three radio repeater stations. We were required to install three radio repeater stations. The first installation went smoothly, but we faced challenges with the second station. I decided to start everything from scratch, which led me to discover that our premade feeder cables were faulty. Once we rectified this underlying issue, everything progressed smoothly, and the project was a success.

If you could recommend one book that you believe everyone should read, what would it be and why?

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. This book offers valuable insights for anyone looking to improve their personal and professional lives.

What is your dream job and what motivates you about it?

I wish to be self-employed, or work in the consulting space. To me, work-life balance, flexibility and the freedom to choose my hours plays an important role.

What advice would you offer to professionals who are just starting their careers based on your own experiences?

I highly recommend beginning by setting clear goals, separating them into short and long-term objectives. Build a strong network, develop technical and soft skills, remain open to feedback and constructive criticism, and never stop learning.
