So Liteboho, introduce yourself as a professional and as a woman. Do you believe that these two identities blend?

I am Liteboho Mafa. I am a daughter, a mom, and an aunt. I study Biomedical Science, so I am one of the women in Health Sciences. While being a woman comes with many challenges because of social beliefs and how we were groomed at a young age, I believe that we all have what it takes to be the best we can be as women. In my professional journey, I have never been treated differently because I am a woman. I believe that as women, we can use good qualities such as empathy at our workplaces and help others, so the two identities blend together.

What do you think gives women an edge at home, at work, and in society? What are our strengths as women?

For me, it will be adaptation and empathy. And how can we forget multitasking…

What are some changes you would like to see in the current work culture for the next generation of women?

I believe it's important to have more women in leadership positions. However, I would like to see a change in the current leadership style and approach. We need leaders who are confident and well-versed in their roles. We have women in leadership, but I’ve observed that some of them may not be as approachable or content as they could be. It’s concerning to see that some women choose to sacrifice having a family for being successful in their careers. I believe it’s important for women to have a work-life balance, just like men.

Who are the women that inspire you, both professionally and personally?

I am inspired by a lot of beautiful, hardworking women. Firstly my sister. Unfortunately, she is no longer with us. One thing I liked about her was her ability not to harbor hatred and tell the truth.

There is also this lady by the name of Amanda Dambuza. When I listened to her story, she mentioned that she knew that no one was coming to save her. So she had to work hard to achieve all she has now.

What advice do you have for fellow women looking to enter the workplace? Especially the Science field.

First, you must love yourself and know yourself. You should learn from your mistakes and learn from other people's mistakes. Secondly, never give up. Although sometimes we fail, we need to change strategies and try again. You must also be willing to unlearn as much as you learn. Finally, we are women and we should stop copying men. Let us be women.
