Master in Procurement and Contract Management | Batch 2023

 Please tell us about yourself.

My name is Joyce Morlin, and I am from Papua New Guinea. I have been working as a Procurement Specialist for more than a decade. My procurement experience has been in the public sector, primarily within the mineral industry. The favorite part of my job is achieving a win-win outcome for both parties in a procurement transaction. I am delighted that I have been accepted to the Master in Procurement and Contract Management Programme.

What drew you to the programme you are studying at UniAthena? Do you think it would help you realize your career goals?

I am passionate about procurement, so I decided to pursue the Masters programme. It would complement my experience and help me realize my career goals.

What would you like to learn next?

I have been taking courses in project management. I would like to enhance my skills and knowledge in this area.

What are your next career steps?

I am determined to become an expert in procurement, specifically in the public sector. I would also like to be a mentor to others in this field, especially considering Papua New Guinea lacks public procurement professionals.

How has your academic journey prepared you for your career?

Procurement is a strategic business management function, and studying business  management at its core has laid the foundation for my career in procurement.

Tell us about a time you planned and accomplished a challenging goal.

Increased workload and priorities can affect performance. Being a control freak  is a personal weakness of mine. I started delegating work tasks, and as a result, I facilitated the learning and skill-building of the team. I was able to focus on tasks that required my full attention.

Considering all the people you have met in your field, what personal attributes do you believe are essential for success?

I firmly believe the personal attributes essential for success are admitting your mistakes; effective communication; commitment; patience; willingness to learn; and an unwavering passion.

Describe a time when you stepped outside your comfort zone and demonstrated leadership skills.

Board presentations are nerve-racking, but they gave me confidence in broadening my horizons. It allows me to demonstrate strategic thinking.

Which book would you recommend as a must-read for everyone, and why?

I recommend How to Win Friends and Influence People" by Dale Carnegie. The book taught me to stay positive and away from negativity; to be calm and self-disciplined; and to have empathy.

What is your dream job, and why?

My dream job is becoming a CEO, possibly of my own company, because I want to be able to build and help others with my experience.

Do you have any message for professionals just starting out in their careers?

Be committed; work smart; have patience; what's destined for you will find its way to you." Respect others; your success in the workplace relies on the relationships that you keep; and when you get to the top, "be a service leader".
