Please tell us about yourself.

My name is Jeremiah Mkomba, a seasoned professional with 16 years’ hands-on experience in Finance, Grants, and Contract Management with International Non-Governmental Organizations and the Public Service; with a proven track record. I am highly focused on my ability to establish and maintain productive partnerships with donors and partners by gaining trust, respect, and confidence. Besides the Bachelor of Accountancy from the University of Malawi, I hold a Master’s in International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid from the Kalu Institute of Spain which I attained in 2020. I have recently earned a Certification in Project Designing with the International Training Centre of the International Labor Organization, Turin, Italy.

What drew you to the programme you are studying at UniAthena? Do you think it would help you realize your career goals?

I have recently joined Chemonics International as Director-Subcontracts, where I'm responsible for streamlining the management and administration of contracts. I would like to get more acquainted with procurement and contract concepts on the global stage.

What would you like to learn next?

I would like to grasp the procurement and contract concepts that will be relevant in day-to-day operations and the execution of my role with the project I am working on.

What are your next career steps?

Having worked with the International Non-Governmental Organizations in the local context, I would like to contribute my skills at the global level, supporting the operations of the projects as an expert in Grants and Contracts Management.

How has your academic journey prepared you for your career?

Following the completion of a Masters Degree in International Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid, I have streamlined my career to manage the Partnerships and Contracts Cycle. This has equipped me with interpersonal, negotiation, and communication skills relevant to my current role with Chemonics International.

Tell us about a time you planned and accomplished a challenging goal.

In my recent role with Norwegian Church Aid and Danish Church Aid, the Malawi Joint Country Program, I was managing a grant portfolio with the responsibilities of coordinating the project implementation, financial management, and reporting to the donor. By virtue of this, planning was essential for the proper execution of my duties. I planned the annual reporting process for fourteen implementing partners in a consortium setup. I  summarized and consolidated them into one report for submission to the donor, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Considering all the people you've met in your field, what personal attributes do you believe are essential for success?

Having met different people from different backgrounds, beliefs, and professions in my career journey, I have learned that success is a factor of effective communication, discipline, timeliness, honesty, openness, willingness to learn patience, passion, and dedication.

Describe a time you stepped outside your comfort zone and demonstrated leadership skills.

My line manager attempted to defraud the Organization by creating fictitious activities to siphon funds from the project. In light of the plan, I approached and negotiated with him to refrain from being involved in the act. Despite my fears that my working relationship would be affected, the plan worked, and the organization's funds were saved.

Which book would you recommend as a must-read for everyone, and why?

Rich Dad, Poor Dad by Robert Kiyosaki because of the practical insights and real-life lessons the book provides in accumulating and managing personal wealth.

What is your dream job, and why?

With my passion for international development, I would like to contribute my skills at a global level as an expert in Procurement and Contract Management, thereby adding value to the development and people's lives.

Do you have any message for professionals just starting out in their careers?

Yes, patience, dedication, and personal continuous professional development are must for one to succeed.
