Executive Diploma in Innovation & Entrepreneurship I Batch 2023

Please tell us about yourself.

I am a medical doctor. I am 32 years old and have 7 years of clinical practice experience. I served as a Medical Director for a hospital and, subsequently, as its CEO. Currently, I am working as the Deputy Bureau Head for the Oromia Regional Health Bureau, Ethiopia. I recently completed my Master Degree in Public Health and also completed the Master of Arts in Leadership program. I am pursuing an MBA  and learning other fields simultaneously, including project management, data science, and public health.

What drew you to the programme you are studying at UniAthena? Do you think it would help you realize your career goals?

The flexibility to upskill with my full-time job coupled with the dynamic teaching approaches is something that sparked my interest in learning with UniAthena.

What is your dream job?

As I look forward to the future, I see myself as a successful business owner, demonstrating multidimensionality in both my professional and personal pursuits. This is why I am actively enrolling in a diversity of management and business courses. By embracing a multidisciplinary approach, I am developing my adaptability, resilience, and focus. My goal is to emerge as a prominent leader, specialized in healthcare systems and related fields.

What would you like to learn next?

However, I'm drawn to the idea of pursuing a Master's in Innovation and Entrepreneurship, my primary inclination tends towards programmes such as an MSC in Global Health or an MSC in International Health, particularly if available in an online format.

Which book would you recommend as a must-read for everyone, and why?

Goleman's Emotional Intelligence is a must-read that I strongly recommend.

Describe a time you stepped outside your comfort zone and demonstrated leadership skills.

During the era of the COVID-19 outbreak, I was exposed to new cases I was unfamiliar with, both in the hospital and in the community. Establishing frequent handwashing facilities and promoting the use of facemasks posed significant challenges, further aggravated by widespread fear within the community. Nevertheless, we were able to overcome it by leveraging an integrated leadership approach with our various stakeholders, community members, and clients.

Considering all the people you've met in your field, what personal attributes do you believe are essential for success?

I believe qualities such as persistence, patience, continued efforts, perseverance, integrity, and time management are critical to success.

Do you have any message for professionals just starting out in their careers?

Continuous learning should be the guiding principle for everyone, regardless of their role as a leader, manager, or expert. With each day of learning, I feel myself growing and becoming a better version of myself.
