Tell us about yourself and what made you choose your program at UniAthena? How do you think it will help you in your future career?

My name is Eric Cassell, an Accountant and Financial Advisor. When I first applied for a scholarship for my MBA program while working in the public sector, I was not selected. Subsequently, I searched for an accredited program that offered flexibility and affordability and discovered UniAthena.

I am currently pursuing an MBA in Digital Transformation with UniAthena, given my position as Financial Advisor in the Liberian Senate. I have also enrolled in the Postgraduate Certificate in Public Financial Management to strengthen my credentials. This program is intended to provide additional knowledge that may facilitate my participation in current public financial management reforms.

What are you most excited to learn or explore next in your studies?

What excites me most is the opportunity to learn from a global perspective through practical experiences provided by UniAthena’s faculty members.

Could you outline your career goals you have in mind for after completing your current academic journey?

My goal is to work as a Public Sector Financial Management Specialist, with a focus on digital transformation initiatives.

How are you managing your studies along with the work in your personal life?

As an Entrepreneur and Financial Advisor to the Senate, I rely on UniAthena’s LMS study planner to efficiently organize my studies alongside work. It helps me manage time, balance professional commitments, and keep up with academic goals.

Share a specific example of a challenging goal you set for yourself and successfully accomplished. What did you learn from this experience?

As CFO of the Insurance Company of Africa, I pursued becoming a Zoho Partner despite stringent requirements. While still working full-time, I registered a company and hired fresh graduates—cost-effective and easily aligned with my vision. I dedicated four extra hours daily, plus weekends, for two years. My team trained relentlessly on Zoho software until they achieved certification. The success of our first project gave me the confidence to fully transition into tech entrepreneurship.

The journey demanded consistency, early mornings, late nights, and an unwavering focus. The key lesson I learnt is that persistence conquers hurdles. When you're committed to a goal, setbacks become stepping stones.

From your experiences so far, what personal qualities do you think are important for achieving success?

I believe consistency and time management are foundations of growth.

Tell us about a time when you stepped outside your comfort zone to take on a leadership role. What was the outcome?

The most rewarding experience was transitioning from managing a department to leading an entire company of my own. The result was a successful startup, built on the same principles I upheld—leading by example and staying true to my values."

If you could recommend one book that you believe everyone should read, what would it be and why?

"For over a decade, I have been reading articles and conducting internet research to learn more. This has also included YouTube videos and short online courses. I haven’t read books regularly since I left undergraduate school."

What is your dream job and what motivates you about it?

My dream job is the one I created for myself—working as a financial consultant. What motivates me is the fact that I’m doing what I love.

What advice would you offer to professionals who are just starting their careers based on your own experiences?

"Don’t try to be like anyone else—stay true to who you are and pursue your dreams.
