Please tell us about yourself.

My name is Akatuhurira Oscar, and I am originally from Uganda. I recently completed my Diploma in Environment, Health, and Safety Management from UniAthena. Additionally, I hold a number of short course certificates and several webinar certificates from UniAthena. I am driven by an insatiable curiosity and a deep desire to learn. My journey in life is guided by the belief that every experience, every interaction, and every lesson shapes who I am and who I aspire to become. I am not just a passive observer; I am an active participant in my own growth and the betterment of my community. Through it all, I am guided by a sense of purpose, a belief that each day offers new opportunities for growth and discovery. I think this is my story of hope, resilience, and the endless pursuit of knowledge and meaning.

What would you like to learn next?

From the onset, I was really excited about the opportunity to earn a Diploma in Environment, Health, and Safety Management (EHS) from UniAthena. Concerning what to learn next, I must say I am super passionate about academic degrees with a fusion of environment and business. It would be great if I could get some financial support or a scholarship, given my current financial situation. I think UniAthena's resources and commitment could really empower me to make a difference in the world.

What are your next career steps?

I am striving to find a job where I can put my environment, digital skills, and business acumen to work for me, a career that challenges me to push my boundaries. I am eager to continue learning and take on some leadership roles subsequently, all while making a positive impact on the community at large.

How has your academic journey prepared you for your career?

My time at school has given me much more than just facts and figures. The experience taught me to work hard, think critically, and adapt to a variety of situations. I feel those skills will come in handy no matter where my career takes me.

Tell us about a time you planned and accomplished a challenging goal.

Planning a charity event to raise awareness about “Break Free from Plastic “ was certainly challenging. The experience turned out to be rewarding in the end. It took a great deal of teamwork and considerable determination and resources, but seeing it all come together in the end made it absolutely worthwhile.

Considering all the people you've met in your field, what personal attributes do you believe are essential for success?

Communication is critical in all aspects. Besides that, empathy, putting yourself in someone else's shoes plays an imperative role. Finally, resilience is the key to a thriving future. Things don't always go as planned, but the ability to bounce back is what separates the successful from the rest.

Describe a time you stepped outside your comfort zone and demonstrated leadership skills.

Taking on the initiative to clean up the local market in Kalerwe was undoubtedly a challenging endeavour for me. It was nerve-wracking at first, but witnessing the community come together to work on saving the environment from plastic was truly incredible. It truly demonstrated the power of teamwork and the possibilities when we unite for a common goal.

Which book would you recommend as a must-read for everyone, and why?

My recommendation for one book everyone should read would be The New Psychology of Success" by Carol Dweck. It really changed my perspective on diverse fronts. It taught me to embrace challenges and see failures as opportunities to grow.

What is your dream job, and why?

My dream job is to take on the role of University Professor, where I can impart knowledge and inspire the next generation of learners. I am passionate about sharing my expertise and fostering intellectual curiosity in students, creating a stimulating learning environment that nurtures their inner potential.

Do you have any messages for professionals just starting out in their careers?

For professionals just starting out in their careers, I would say, keep learning, keep pushing yourself to do better, don't be afraid to seek assistance, and don't give up when things get tough.
