For decades, AI-based films have gained increasing popularity; most of the time, these entertaining films also act as cautionary tales about the future prospects of human-machine interactions. The collaboration between Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Cinema can yield a rich tapestry of stories reflecting hopes, fears, and ethical dilemmas surrounding the widespread use of a borderline dystopian technology like AI.

Iconic AI-Themed Movies:

Here are some of the most iconic and influential AI-themed movies over the years:

M3GAN (2023)

M3GAN is a horror-thriller that integrates AI to the classic "killer doll" trope. The film centers on an eerily lifelike AI doll, M3GAN, programmed to be the best friend of a child. But when her protective instincts become lethal, it raises a critical question: does AI belong in areas of human empathy, care and guardianship? The movie—other than being real and frightening—reveals an area wherein the technology went astray due to a failure to set strict boundaries between humans and machines.

The Creator (2023)

The Creator is a beautiful sci-fi epic set in a future where humans wage war against AI. The movie narrates the story of a soldier assigned to demolish a super-intelligent AI appearing as a child. It contains a deep profound discourse on creation, identity, and the morally binding questions of war with AI. The story provokes questions within its viewers about the moral consequences of using AI, both as a weapon and a living being.

Her (2013)

Spike Jonze's Her offers a unique take on AI, focusing on Artificial Intelligence and human connection. The film tells the story of Theodore, who falls in love with an AI operating system named Samantha. ‘Her’ explores the boundaries of love, intimacy, and what it means to be alive, challenging the audience to reconsider the potential for AI to fulfil human emotional needs.

Ex Machina (2014)

Ex Machina, directed by Alex Garland, is a tense psychological thriller that delves into the ethics of AI creation. The film centers on Ava, a highly advanced humanoid AI, and the moral dilemmas faced by her creator. Ex Machina follows a young programmer named Caleb, who is invited by his reclusive CEO to evaluate the human qualities of Ava. As Caleb interacts with Ava, he begins to question her consciousness, emotions, and the ethical implications of her creation, leading to a tense psychological battle between human and machine.

AI: Artificial Intelligence (2001)

This film is a futuristic fairy tale about a robot boy named David, designed to experience human emotions, particularly love. Abandoned by his human family, David embarks on a journey to become "real" so he can regain their love. The film explores complex questions about the nature of love, consciousness, and what it means to be accepted as human, blending emotional storytelling with thought-provoking ethical dilemmas.

The Impact of AI-Themed Films:

AI-themed movies have had a profound impact on both cinema and society. They have sparked debates about the ethical implications of AI, influenced public perception of the technology, and even inspired real-world advancements in AI research. These films serve as a mirror, reflecting our hopes and fears about a future where machines may think, feel, and potentially surpass human intelligence.

AI movies often present contrasting narratives, showcasing AI as either a benevolent tool for progress or a malevolent threat. This duality can create confusion and mixed feelings among the public. For instance, films like Her and WALL-E portray AI as beneficial companions, fostering trust in AI's potential to improve human lives. Conversely, movies like The Terminator and Ex Machina highlight the dangers of AI, reinforcing fears and skepticism about its capabilities and intentions. Such contrasting depictions can lead to a polarized public opinion on AI technology

The Role of AI in Film Production:

AI software like Deepfake Technology has been used to create realistic face swaps in movies, such as in "The Irishman" to de-age actors. This offers a cost-effective alternative to traditional CGI. AI is also used in colour grading and editing. IBM Watson was used to create the movie trailer for "Morgan," analysing visuals, sounds, and compositions from other movie trailers to determine what would be most appealing to audiences.

  • Virtual Filmmaking: AI could assist in creating realistic virtual environments, reducing the need for physical sets, offering more creative freedom and reduced production costs.
  • Predictive Storytelling: AI could analyze audience preferences and social trends to suggest storylines and genres that are more likely to resonate with viewers, leading to more commercially successful films.
  • Script Analysis and Prediction: Tools like ScriptBook use natural language processing to analyse scripts, predict box office success, and offer insights into plot and character development. For instance, 20th Century Fox employed AI to analyse the script of "Logan," aiding in informed decisions about the movie's plot and themes.

Conclusion

AI-themed movies offer more than just entertainment; they provide a platform for exploring complex questions about the nature of intelligence, consciousness, and the human experience. As AI continues to evolve, so too will its portrayal in cinema, offering new perspectives on our relationship with intelligent machines. Whether through dystopian warnings or hopeful visions, these films challenge us to further explore the role AI will play in shaping our future.
