Please tell us about yourself.
I am 39 years old, born in South Africa and currently living in Malawi. I am currently employed as General Manager at Farmers World, which has 132 retail stores and employs 1,517 employees. I started my retail career with Shoprite (biggest retailer in Africa) and that's where I discovered my passion for retail and business management began. I am married and a father of two boys, ages 9 and 11. I love the outdoors and mountain biking.
What drew you to the programme you are studying at UniAthena? Do you think it would help you realise your career goals
I was looking for an online course that's 100% online and globally recognized. It is certainly going to help me reach my goals in the coming years.
What would you like to learn next?
At this time, I would just like to finish my MBA and focus on my career before moving on to my next career step.
What are your next career steps?
Our company operates in many African countries with huge potential for career growth. With this course I will be able to advance to the director level.
How has your academic journey prepared you for your career?
I started my career in retail, which allowed me to attend numerous courses and certificates while I worked. This enabled me to gain valuable knowledge and move up the career ladder at the same time.
Tell us about a time you planned and accomplished a challenging goal.
We operate two separate retail businesses with 132 stores (87 and 45) operating independently. I merged the two businesses to ensure all processes and systems were synchronized. All aspects of the business can be viewed under one roof now and managed from one central office.
Considering all the people you've met in your field, what personal attributes do you believe are essential for success?
You must be driven and goal-oriented at all times. Trust plays a big role and can only be earned based on the way you act and show your capabilities.
Describe a time you stepped outside your comfort zone and demonstrated leadership skills.
This year, when I had to represent our business at Malawi parliament regarding fertilizer supply for their Affordable input program.
Which book would you recommend as a must-read for everyone, and why?
Rich Dad Poor Dad- The book changes your perception towards how to manage your business and finances.
What is your dream job, and why?
Being honest, I’m in my dream job managing a huge enterprise, making decisions I take complete ownership of and responsibility for. The next step will be becoming the country's Managing Director, where I will oversee all business activities.
Do you have any message for professionals just starting out in their careers?
No matter how challenging the path looks or unachievable, you must believe in yourself and always keep focus. It’s vital that you push your boundaries and be willing to learn from your mistakes but do not repeat them.
