Please tell us about yourself.

My name is Gladness Makhosazana Khoza. I am a 53-year-old Registered Nurse from South Africa, presently living and working in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing Science from the University of Fort Hare, Alice, South Africa, and a Diploma in Nephrology Nursing from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. I have been a Registered Nurse for 27 years and am interested in learning and furthering my studies to gain knowledge and enhance my skills.

I have been doing short courses through UniAthena and other online institutions for two years. I am hard-working and looking forward to my studies with UniAthena.

What drew you to the programme you are studying at UniAthena? Do you think it would help you realise your career goals?

As an Assistant Nurse Manager and an experienced nurse, I found it important to learn more about Leadership and Management, especially in the Public Sector as to impart knowledge to my subordinates and colleagues during mentorship and supervision. I have a teaching and education role that I need to fulfill to ensure the provision of safe and quality care to my patients and their families. I want to have sound knowledge of the Effective Administration of Public Service Processes and Principles to deliver care successfully. This course will definitely assist me in realizing my career goals.

What would you like to learn next?

After my Master's Qualifications, I am planning to enroll for a PhD and further my studies.

What are your next career steps?

I am planning to become a lecturer in the Nursing College or University after my PhD to impact knowledge.

How has your academic journey prepared you for your career?

I have gained skills and knowledge over the years through my studies and short courses, and that has helped me provide informed nursing care to my patients.

Tell us about a time you planned and accomplished a challenging goal.

It was last year when our Director of Nursing decided to involve all Assistant Nurse Managers in the charge Nurse Development Course. Here, you are expected to have a teaching plan and develop teaching strategies to do virtual presentations to all Charge Nurses in the district. That for me was challenging due to the large audience that was going to be attending; moreover, it was online, where one cannot gauge their performance except through the participation of the recipients, which was a challenge. I managed to make them participate eventually, and all went well.

Considering all the people you've met in your field, what personal attributes do you believe are essential for success?

I think that attentive listening without judgement and allowing yourself to receive negative reinforcement and criticism as we learn from it.

Which book would you recommend as a must-read for everyone, and why?

A book called Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen and Anna Quindlen. It is one of the good reads; it can also be an audiobook, and it's about life in general.

What is your dream job, and why?

Given another chance to choose a career, I would always choose nursing. There is nothing more fulfilling than witnessing patients progress and return to their normal health after receiving comprehensive, safe, and quality care.

Do you have any message for professionals just starting out in their careers?

Patience is a virtue, learn as much as you can from your superiors, as the Nursing Profession is more practical and less theoretical. Experience is also imperative in the profession. Be positive-minded and accept criticism as a learning curve.
