Please tell us about yourself and your family.
My name is Benjamin Anyuon, bestowed upon me by my father. It was inevitable, as I should be named after my great grandfather in accordance with family custom. I was born in Aweil town, the capital city of northern Bahr el Ghazal state in the northern part of South Sudan. I am married with kids and now work for the Child Advocacy and Women Development Center (CAWDC-Africa) an organization I founded more than 15 years ago.
What drew you to the programme you are studying at UniAthena? Do you think it would help you realise your career goals?
Over the past few years, I have developed an appetite for establishing business in the future and have participated in the development of business strategies for the country’s public and private sectors. Considering the existence of oil and gas in South Sudan, I decided that I should prepare myself academically to work in the international markets dealing with oil and gas’ transactions. In order to accomplish this, an advanced degree in international business administration is ideal, so I quickly decided to enrol.
The degree will enable me to engage in international trade transactions involving oil, gas, and other natural resources abundantly available for international sale. With this Master degree in International Business, I can confidently and competitively contribute to South Sudan's government institutions, with the aim of representing South Sudan in international business.
What would you like to learn next? What are your next career steps?
I am fascinated by South Sudan's oil and gas industry. So I anticipate pursuing an advanced degree in international oil and gas law and policy. My foremost objective is to venture into formulating laws and policies that regulate the international sales of natural resources in South Sudan.
What do you think makes a great teacher?
A great teacher is someone who spends time on the topic or lessons, plans well for the students, and takes time to know the needs of the students. Providing them necessary attention, listening to them, communicating effectively, and showing a humble nature. A great teacher is not immune from criticism, he/she must accept corrections.
What’s your dream job?
I am aspiring to be one of the leading South Sudanese International Business Strategists in the future.
If you face a problem at work, what is the first thing you do?
The first thing I did was address it informally by seeking input from my boss or a colleague. Informal discussion helps ease the tension. If the problem persists, there is a need for a third party that would help us reach a solution. Other measures that I could take is following the administrative procedures to address the problem.
What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your life? How did you tackle it?
My organization is a nonprofit entity, so I market/advertise the organisation through lobbying and advocacy. At one point, there was a scarcity of funders for one reason or another, so we strategized a mechanism by reviewing all our policy documents and our internal processes and relationships with the public and donors. As soon as that was accomplished, I and my team successfully managed to lure back those donors who initially did not want to work with us.
If you could only change one thing about yourself, what would it be?
Having an advanced degree in business has the potential to completely transform me.
What was the last book you read and the last movie you saw?
The last book I read was "Essentials of Business Law," sixth edition, by Ewan Macintre.
The last movie I watched was "Blood Diamond" by Leonardo DiCaprio and Djimon Hounsou.
Mention one important lesson you have learned in life that has made you who you are today.
What I learned in life is that no matter the situation, don’t give up, and that is being "perseverant."
