Master in Public Health Batch 2022

Please tell us about yourself and your family.

I’ve worked for many years in the creative field, but I always had a keen interest in health and disease prevention, so five years ago I started an academic journey to gain knowledge in this field, which resulted in a BS in Health Science and led me to join UniAthena. I come from a family of professionals in different fields, so we cherish the opportunity to converse about our daily endeavours. They have been very supportive of my learning and professional journey, and I really appreciate that.

What drew you to the programme you are studying at UniAthena? Do you think it would help you realise your career goals?

I was looking for a Master in Public Health that was both affordable and flexible so that I could balance it well with my daily life commitments. UniAthena offers both qualities, and on top of that, it provides a high quality education with a final certification accredited by a state-recognized institution. This will help me have a solid foundation to break into the public health field.

What would you like to learn next? What are your next career steps?

I will eventually look forward to getting a PhD in public health; for the time being, I'm focusing on mastering what this course has to offer while also honing the hard skills (programming languages) used in the field. I would like to keep the possibilities open for both an analytical career and one in management, according to what the market requires.

What do you think makes a great teacher?

A great teacher is one who has the ability to convey difficult notions in ways that are easy to understand and instil confidence in the student. I believe in my teachers, and I feel very confident when they also believe in my abilities.

What’s your dream job?

My dream job is in the epidemiology field because I care about public health and I enjoy working with data.

If you face a problem at work, what is the first thing you do?

Usually, problems always seem very complicated at first, so the first thing I do is take the necessary steps to fully understand the issue and identify the root of the problem.

What is the biggest challenge you’ve faced in your life? How did you tackle it?

When I moved abroad for a job opportunity, I felt overwhelmed with having to deal with many things at once in an unfamiliar environment, everything felt so new and different. I've tackled this issue with thorough research and meticulous organisation. These methods stuck with me; to this day, when I’m faced with a big challenge, I tend to split it up into smaller tasks that are easier to handle.

If you could only change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I would like to be more spontaneous in social interactions, as I do well in social contexts, but it requires a good deal of preparation (such as when pitching to clients), whereas for some people it seems to be a more natural process.

What was the last book you read and the last movie you saw?

The last book I read was "The Thirty-Nine Steps," an adventure novel by John Buchan that narrates the adventures of Richard Hannay just before the onset of World War I. The last movie I saw was "The Internship," a light-hearted comedy with an inspiring message - you're never too old to have a career change.

Mention one important lesson you learned in life that has made you who you are today.

I used to think that it would have been too complicated to study with good grades while also working and parenting. However, I soon discovered that with solid commitment and determination, everything can be done successfully. Today, I'm very proud of the results I've received, and they keep me motivated to improve further.
