After graduation, I have worked for both profit-making and non-governmental organization as Marketing Officer, Marketing Manager, and Director of Operations. The last position was that of Deputy Country Director for Banja La Mtsogolo, a non-profit-making organization based in Malawi. I decided to pursue my business interests in 2010 and have been working as Managing Director for our business ever since.
What drew you to the program you are studying at Athena? Is it living up to your expectations?
I was motivated by the payment flexibility at Athena and the speed at which one can graduate if committed to the study program. In addition, the demonstration video was so eye catching that I visualized myself in class learning and upgrading myself. It was a well-produced teaching video.
What would you like to learn next? What are your next career steps?
I am very keep to pursue the MBA program in General Management and would love to study for a Ph.D. once I finish this MBA program. I hope you also offer the Ph.D. program. My aim is to go for a course with emphasis on business management.
Are you working somewhere? If yes, what do you feel is the most enjoyable/rewarding aspect of your job?
I am currently running a small business called Cindy Promotional Supplies as the Managing Director. I have a passion for making presentations to potential clients since it gives me an opportunity to utilize my public speaking skills. I also enjoy planning jobs starting from identification of raw materials, procurement, production, and supply. Being on top of the entire production process enables me to appreciate Operations Management.
What do you see as your greatest strength?
I possess great analytical skills and am a good public speaker. Those are my major assets.
What is your most cherished memory?
I have vivid memories of my visit to Sri Lanka in February 2005 a month after the tsunami that destroyed a large part of the country. It was like visiting a historical site. It made me realize how fragile life is and that we need to celebrate every day of our lives.
Which country have you always wanted to visit and why?
I would love to visit Switzerland.
Do you have professional role models? Who are they and what do you find inspiring about them and their accomplishments?
My role model is a young Malawian lawyer called John Suzi Banda. He is very articulate and so intensely focused that he has his name linked with all key legal positions in the country. He even became President of the Malawi Law Society at a very young age. He has set up a charity targeting the poor in neighboring villages as a way of giving back to society.
If you could go on a road trip with anyone in history, who would it be?
It would certainly be with my wife who happens to be my best friend. I will need to travel with someone I am comfortable with, someone who shares my values and understands me well. And that person is my wife Mercy.
What have you learnt from your experiences that you would like to pass on to others?
I have learnt the beauty of planning. Planning is the gateway to successful business implementation. In a manufacturing organization, I have also learnt the importance of visiting the various sections of the production process using Management By Walking About (MBWA). This has enabled me to appreciate every production process and understand the reason behind every step taken in producing a product.
Moreover, I have learnt the vital importance of hard work. Nothing comes easy so they say and I believe that hard work eventually pays.
