Wings of Fire Book Review – Autobiography of A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

“Wings of Fire: An Autobiography of Abdul Kalam”  is written by Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam and Arun Tiwari. This book is an autobiography of Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam, former president of India. This story sheds light on the journey of a young boy from Rameswaram who went on to become a renowned scientist. It reflects how simple living, dedication, strong will, and hard work led to success. The book also highlights how cultural unity can shape and strengthen the lives of individuals.

Even decades after its publication, Wings of Fire continues to resonate strongly in today’s modern and fast-changing world of AI, innovation, and career uncertainty. Its ideology makes it especially relevant for Gen Z and millennials navigating questions of purpose, leadership, and personal growth.

Childhood, Family Values, and Cultural Harmony

The story begins with Kalam as a boy around the 1930s in the village of Rameswaram, where he lived with his parents, four brothers, and one sister. The author emphasizes the role of family, relatives, friends, and society in shaping an individual's character. Kalam describes his village as a place where people lived in harmony, and religious discrimination was unknown.

A passage that beautifully captures this unity reads:

“The high priest of Rameswaram temple, Pakshi Lakshmana Sastry, was a very close friend of my father’s. One of the most vivid memories of my early childhood is of the two men, each in his traditional attire, discussing spiritual matters.”

This part of the book strongly conveys values of mutual respect, inclusivity, and coexistence, principles that feel especially relevant in today’s divided world.

Dreams, Failures, and the Making of a Leader

When he was very young, Kalam aspired to join the Indian Air Force but he was unable to clear the interview. Far from being demotivated, he chose to focus on his studies, starting his career in the Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE), where he worked on the design of a hovercraft. He later went to NASA on a training program and eventually joined the  Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO).

During this phase, Kalam met visionaries like Vikram Sarabhai and several other brilliant minds who deeply influenced his thinking. The book highlights leadership and teamwork during major projects and shows how true leadership emerges not only in success but also in failure.

Relevance in Today’s Technological Era

In the current era of rapid technological disruption, artificial intelligence, and evolving career paths, Dr. Kalam’s journey offers timeless leadership lessons for students and professionals alike. His ability to turn failure into learning, collaborate across disciplines, and stay rooted in strong values reflects the skills most demanded today - resilience, adaptability, ethical leadership, and lifelong learning.

For a generation facing job uncertainty and constant change, Wings of Fire stands out as a guide to building a meaningful career without losing one’s moral compass.

Scientific Achievements and Detailed Project Narratives

The book goes on to reveal the extensive and detailed project work undertaken by Dr. APJ Kalam, which I find distracting from the story of his life. Some readers may find these detailed descriptions boring and unappealing. However, these chapters highlight the successful execution of projects like “Agni” and reflect India’s growing technological growth.

The book also narrates India’s scientific achievements at a time when few nations could boast of similar projects. It acknowledges the contributions of some brilliant minds who worked behind India’s space research, including Vikram Sarabhai and Dr. Brahm Prakash, and their role in shaping ISRO.

Reading Experience and Final Reflection

As a reader, this book initially is very interesting, particularly the portions from his younger days as a college student, like how his family encouraged him. Later, the writing becomes a bit monotonous as it gives minute illustrations of the projects. Towards the end, Kalam offers advice to the younger generation, urging them not to get demotivated and lead a positive life.

In an age dominated by instant success narratives and social media validation, Wings of Fire reminds readers that true growth is slow, disciplined, and deeply human. This autobiography demonstrates how Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam’s simple living, positive thinking, and unwavering dedication continue to inspire not just Indian youth but generations to come.
