The fully online Master Degree gives me the opportunity to learn from leading public health experts and industry practitioners so I can transform, progress, and realize my career goals.

What would you like to learn next?

I would like to further my education in health administration.

What are your next career steps?

My next career steps involve leveraging my current skills and experiences to take on more leadership responsibilities within my current organisation. In tandem, I would like to capitalize on opportunities that allow me to thrive in public health as a part-time lecturer.

How has your academic journey prepared you for your career?

My academic journey has provided me with the necessary skills and mindset to excel in healthcare and make significant contributions through engaging coursework, practical experiences, and internships.

Tell us about a time you planned and accomplished a challenging goal.

One occasion where I planned and achieved a challenging goal in healthcare was when I led a health fair at a children's home in Trinidad. This initiative demanded meticulous planning, collaboration with specialist physicians, and overcoming resistance to change. I led the effort in forming a multidisciplinary team, researching best practices extensively, and crafting a comprehensive strategy. We conducted rigorous staff training, followed up closely, and made adjustments as needed. Over the course of several months, our efforts yielded a remarkable outcome. We were able to engage with two hundred children, offering general medical, dental, and vision checks, as well as providing health education in a variety of areas pertinent to risk. This experience underscored the importance of perseverance, teamwork, and evidence-based approaches in attaining ambitious healthcare objectives.

Considering all the people you've met in your field, what personal attributes do you believe are essential for success?

Compassion, integrity, resilience, the ability to communicate effectively, and strong problem-solving skills are all attributes needed to deliver the highest standards of care in this profession.

Describe a time you stepped outside your comfort zone and demonstrated leadership skills.

During my clinical rotations, I encountered a situation where a patient's treatment plan was not being effectively coordinated. I scheduled a meeting with my seniors to address my concerns while advocating for a change in patient management. As a result, we developed a new strategy, which led to improved communication and more efficient patient care delivery. This experience challenged me to demonstrate leadership skills in advocating for patient-centred care.

Which book would you recommend as a must-read for everyone, and why?

One book that I highly recommend as a must-read is “Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End” by Atul Gawande. This book is challenging and insightful, as it inspired me to rethink my approach to patient care. It provided a great reminder of the importance of prioritising quality of life and personal values as I care for my patients.

What is your dream job, and why?

As a family physician working in public health, my dream job would involve serving as a bridge between clinical practice and community health initiatives. By integrating public health principles into my practice, I would be able to tackle social determinants of health, diminish health disparities, and advance health equity.

Do you have any message for professionals just starting out in their careers?

My advice to health professionals just starting out would be to never stop learning and embrace challenges. Yet, I would suggest that if you decide to pursue a career in healthcare, hold onto it with all your heart. By keeping your passion and commitment to helping others at the forefront of your thoughts, you can sustain yourself through highs and lows alike.
