Every year, new ideas come into being and old ones cast away. But one thing is certain, practice must continue. Few men have suffered more from simple cowardice or have been more horribly ashamed of it. The best, quickest and surest method ever devised to conquer timidity, cowardice, and fear is to make one’s weak point the strongest asset.
Opportunities to practice your ideas are on all sides. You have to look around you to see that there is scarcely a single business, community, political, professional, or even neighborhood activity that does not challenge you to step forward. You will never know what progress you can make unless you practice, practice, practice, and practice again. “I know all about that,” most young people would say, “but I hesitate to face the ordeal of learning.”
When we learn any new thing, like Italian or golf or vending, we never advance steadily. We do not improve gradually. We do it by waves, by abrupt starts and sudden stops. Then we remain stationary at times, or we may even slip back and lose some of the ground we have previously gained.
As Professor William James said," Let no youth have any anxiety about the upshot of his education, whatever the line of it may be. If he keeps faithfully busy each hour of the working day, he may safely leave the final results to himself. He can, with perfect certainty, count on waking up some fine morning to find himself one of the competent ones of his generation, in whatever pursuit he may have singled out."
And now, with the renowned Professor James to fall back upon, I shall go so far as to say that if you keep on practicing intelligently, you may confidently hope to wake up one fine morning and find yourself one of the competent candidates of your city or community.
Regardless of how fantastic that may sound to you now, it is true as a general principle. Exceptions, of course, there are. A man with an inferior mentality and personality, and with nothing to talk about, is not going to develop into a local known person; but, within reason, the assertion is correct.
The first essential for business success is patience and the knowledge that reward is ultimately certain. It is likewise one of the first essentials for success in most fields of life. It is only human and natural that an individual with grit and singleness of purpose, is at the top, at the end of the road.
Nothing great is ever achieved without enthusiasm. If you put enthusiasm into learning, you will find that the obstacles in your path disappear. This is a challenge to focus all your talent and power on the goal you want to achieve in life. Thinking of self-reliance, the assurance, the poise that will be yours, comes the sense of mastery from being able to hold the attention, stir the emotions, and convince the society to act. Thus, being a youth in such a generation is all about seizing any opportunity obtained and making the best out of it.
