For a small business to survive in today’s digitally connected world, one must be able to adapt and pivot and face digital transformation challenges. In other words, small businesses need to be willing to take on a digital transformation for their business to stay competitive.

Digital transformation can be described as business transformation using digital capabilities. Beyond that, it's a cultural change that requires organisations to continually challenge the status quo, experiment often, and get comfortable with failure. In other words, it’s more than just adopting technology for technology’s sake.

Digital transformation does not only bring about new start-ups and technologies. It also brings major challenges for small and medium-sized enterprises. It’s problematic when companies decide to embark on a digital transformation agenda without having a clear definition, let alone a vision, for what it means. That means organizations must consider everything when taking on a digital transformation initiative – from how people will react to the change, how it will impact customer relations, the cost, how it will align with business goals, and so forth. This sometimes means walking away from long-standing business processes that companies were built upon in favor of relatively new practices that are still being defined.

Marc Benioff, Chairman and Co-CEO, Salesforce, said: “Digital transformation begins and ends with the customer!” How can we interpret that? Which are the signals of the need for digital transformation in my business?

Now, making the transition from a brick-and-mortar business or traditional storefront to digital initiatives won’t be without its challenges. Being able to overcome challenges is one of the keys to success in business.
